Registration Information

If you're interested in volunteering at the 2013 Carter Work Project, please email

We hope you will join us! We anticipate that opportunities will fill quickly, and we recommend registering soon. The sooner you register and begin fundraising, the sooner you will reach your fundraising minimum and earn an opportunity to participate.

Volunteers who participate during a Presidential Build Day will have the opportunity to be in a group photo with President and Mrs. Carter. Meaningful and enjoyable volunteer opportunities will continue throughout the week.

Before you register, consider how you would like to participate. Your choices include:

  • Building during the President Build Day in Oakland (Monday, October 7)
    $1,000 fundraising requirement
  • Building during the full week in Oakland (Monday, October 7 - Friday, October 11)
    $2,000 fundraising requirement
  • Building during the Presidential Build Day in San Jose (Tuesday, October 8)
    $1,000 fundraising requirement
  • Building during the full week in San Jose (Monday, October 7 - Friday, October 11)
    $2,000 fundraising requirement
  • Assisting with event support for as many days as you would like, in either Oakland or San Jose
    $500 fundraising requirement

If you will be visiting us from out of town:

We recommend that volunteers traveling from out of town register for Oakland, where we will facilitate accommodation and transportation. We have arranged a block of rooms at a discounted rate at The Washington Inn in Oakland for an October 6th check-in and an October 12th check-out. The hotel is conveniently located at 495 10th Street, two blocks away from the 12th Street BART Station in downtown Oakland. A room with one queen bed is $89 per night and a room with two double beds is $92 per night; an Oakland hotel tax of 14% will be added to the room rate for both options. We will provide complimentary transportation from the hotel to the construction site and back each day. Volunteers are also welcome to arrange their own lodging and transportation at a location of their choice. We will provide breakfast and lunch on the construction site, and volunteers will be responsible for dinner and evening entertainment. To participate in all festivities, including opening and closing ceremonies, we recommend scheduling a flight that arrives no later than 2pm on Sunday, October 6th and departs no earlier than 7pm on Friday, October 11th.

If you would like to serve as a crew leader or house leader:

This opportunity is invite-only, and most construction supervision will be recruited locally from our staff, AmeriCorps members, and long-time local volunteers. Construction supervisors are asked to make a multi-day commitment and are offered a reduced fundraising requirement. Please do not register as a crew leader or house leader unless you have previously been invited to serve in this capacity.

If you plan to assist with event support:

Good choice! Event support will be just as action-packed as building and offers a reduced fundraising requirement and scheduling flexibility. We will be in touch with you to schedule your individual event support itinerary.

The nuts and bolts:

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. By registering, you are expressing your intent to fundraise and participate, but your opportunity to participate is not guaranteed until you reach the required fundraising minimum. Registering does not initially commit you to fundraising and donating the required minimum; if you are unable to raise the required minimum, you will have an opportunity to opt out. Donations are non-returnable and non-transferable; If you or not able or choose not to participate in the event, donations will not be returned and may not be allocated to another participant's fundraising goal. [More information about fundraising]
