Dedication, service, and community. These are three words you’ll often hear from an AmeriCorps service member describing their year of service. Some serve in AmeriCorps as a way to spend a gap year or gain experience in the field, but no matter the reason, dedicating a year to service comes easily when you know you’re fighting for hope and opportunity - that’s what AmeriCorps service members do. They’re paving the way for innovative programs and developments, and creating resources to help Habitat East Bay/Silicon Valley grow. Here’s what a few of our AmeriCorps have to say about their experience with Habitat.

Meet Amy!Name: Amy Berg
Position: Corporate Development Coordinator – AmeriCorps VISTA

Why did you choose to become an AmeriCorps service member with Habitat?

I was looking for a job that I could feel good about, something that would create change and allow me to have an impact.

What did you enjoy most about this past year?
I enjoyed learning new skills. It was my first office job, so I was nervous at first that I would find it repetitive, but my position has allowed me to explore many different programs and activities with Habitat. I’ve worked on grants, STEM Playhouse, Corporate Giving, Employee Giving, Community Outreach, and more! It’s really given me the chance to try a lot of new things to develop new interests and skills.

Why did you choose to become an AmeriCorps service member with Habitat?

AmeriCorps gives me the opportunity to be part of Habitat’s mission by bringing people together to build affordable housing. I believe everyone should have a decent place to live.

What did you enjoy most about this past year?
As a Volunteer Coordinator, I participated in many events and builds, among other things. I enjoyed working with Habitat, planning for these activities, and helping Habitat staff accomplish their goals.

Position: Interfaith Programs Coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA

Why did you choose to become an AmeriCorps service member with Habitat?

I chose to become an AmeriCorps member through Habitat EBSV because I wanted to give back to my local community, specifically through my passion for inter-religious service and dialogue - bringing communities together to build homes for those in need.

What did you enjoy most about this past year?
I enjoyed getting out in the community, meeting so many awesome people, and building when I have the chance!

Position: Digital Marketing Coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA

Why did you choose to become an AmeriCorps service member with Habitat?

I wanted experience in Digital Marketing, yet also wanted the work I do to mean something and have a life changing impact in the lives and communities around me. I believe having a decent place to call home is a universal right.

What did you enjoy most about this past year?
Meeting people and hearing their stories. I’ve enjoyed learning about the diverse individuals that make up this growing community. It’s been awesome learning how everyone’s journey may not be the same, but what brings us together is how we use our diverse backgrounds to build a welcoming home.

We can’t thank these AmeriCorps service members enough for the impact they have made on Habitat and our families. We depend on their compassion and dedication to serve more families through our services and programs.

Spend a year building community in the Bay Area as an AmeriCorps, and get the priceless experience of what it truly means to build a home.
