What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs in the United States that focuses on addressing critical needs within communities across the country. AmeriCorps members commit to a specific period of service, usually one year, during which they work with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and other community-based groups to carry out projects and initiatives that directly benefit the community they serve.

How Do AmeriCorps Members Support Habitat for Humanity? 

Habitat East Bay/Silicon Valley is fortunate to have AmeriCorps members serving both through the National Direct Program and the VISTA Program. National Direct service members support Habitat’s efforts by leading crews on our construction sites, working with staff and volunteers to build and renovate affordable homes in our communities. Our AmeriCorps VISTA members, meanwhile, bolster our office staff by helping our affiliate build critical capacity that helps us build – and serve – more.

Responsibilities can include:
●    Construction
●    Home repairs
●    Recruiting and coordinating volunteers
●    Community engagement
●    Assisting future home applicants
●    Supporting our development team

AmeriCorps members receive training related to construction techniques, safety protocols, and any specialized skills required for their role - no experience is necessary. 

How Can You Apply?

As much as Habitat benefits from our incredible AmeriCorps members, many of them say they also walk away with plenty gained from the experience – new skills, new perspectives, and new connections to last a lifetime. Members receive a modest stipend for their service, along with health insurance and an education award that can be used for tuition or student loans upon completing their service term.
