Hundreds Bike to Build Homes at Cycle of Hope

"These are our people!" Elaine said with a smile, relaxing in the ReStore Lounge for a while during Cycle of Hope on October 19th.

While some of the faces may have changed over the years, there's something about the Habitat community that feels familial to Elaine and her husband, Steve. They've owned their Habitat home for 14 years, and the memory of building that home alongside community members is still vivid. The same feeling carries over every time Elaine and Steve volunteer at a Habitat event.

"There's a unity that happens when you're here," Elaine said. "When you're around Habitat, around everybody working together for affordable housing here in California. It's just a wonderful, wonderful place to come and be with your people!"

Plus, adds Steve, "It's great to see all the volunteers and all the riders come out, and get to participate and cheer them on as they ride for Habitat!"

Biking was indeed the order of the day, as hundreds of cyclists donned their helmets to ride the 13-mile, 33-mile, or 66-mile course through beautiful Tri-Valley views. They pushed off the start line at the Dublin headquarters of Presenting Sponsor, Patelco Credit Union, and returned to enjoy a catered lunch, beer and beverages, music, games, booths, family activities and—of course—the community favorite Kids' Ride. 

All along the way, cyclists were supported by our incredible volunteers, keeping everyone safe, hydrated, high-spirited, and riding for the finish.

The athletes' endeavors on that October Sunday were the culmination not only of their training, but also their fundraising efforts. And with close to $300,000 raised, it truly was a bike ride that builds homes. 

The concrete difference that critical funding makes is front of mind for Steve and Elaine. "You being here is so encouraging," Elaine said to the cyclists. Though their five children have "grown and flown," Elaine reflected on having been able to say to them: "This is your neighborhood. This is your block, where you can ride your bikes around and around—this is for you. And it's all because of Habitat that we're able to say that... When you come and partner with the Habitat movement, anything you do with Habitat, you're part of the solution for at least another family."
