Volunteer Abroad
What is the Global Village?
Volunteer abroad with Global Village! Global Village is an international volunteer program that takes volunteers abroad to make a hands-on difference in the countries we support through our Global Investment Program. You will experience the country like a local, with locals from the partnering Habitat affiliate. While these volunteer travels may only last a week or two, the financial, emotional, and physical contributions can be life-changing -- not only for the community where you work, but also for you and your volunteer team.

volunteer in el salvador
In El Salvador, a Central American coast-lined country, 8 out of 10 people live in inadequate housing, often in an overcrowded single room, sleeping on dirt floors, or living under roofs that can't withstand the rainy season. You can help change that.
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity El Salvador, a team of about 12 volunteers from Habitat East Bay/Silicon Valley will travel to El Salvador's Ahuachapán District to build a home from start to finish from January 16-23, 2026!
What to Expect
We’ll work alongside the Salvadoran family who will live in the home, partnering with local Habitat volunteers and building professionals to build a simple, sturdy, comfortable concrete block house with steel reinforcement, metal doors, shuttered glass windows, and cement tile flooring.
Our tasks may include digging dirt; moving sand, rocks, and other materials; mixing and pouring concrete; framing windows and doors; laying cinder blocks; building walls; and painting. We’ll work as a team, taking breaks as needed and respecting everyone’s different abilities and needs.
Anyone 18 years and older are welcome to apply. No building experience or Spanish required.
We'll work hard but also have time for cultural excursions and learning about El Salvador.
TRIP ITINERARY
Day 1
Volunteers will arrive at El Salvador International Airport (SAL), where they will be greeted by Habitat staff and taken to Hotel Alicante in San Salvador, where we'll settle for the first night and have dinner.
Day 2
The following day, we'll travel from San Salvador to Ahuachapán district (similar to a province or state but known as a "departamento" in El Salvador), about a 2-hour drive from San Salvador. After checking into Hotel Santa Elena Segen in Ahuachapán's Concepción de Ataco and having lunch, we'll participate in an in-country orientation to learn more about Habitat El Salvador’s work, local customs, and the week ahead. We'll have dinner together at the hotel.
Days 3-4
It's time to get building! Our build days will begin with a hotel breakfast and traveling by van to the build site. Day 3 will begin with a full on-site orientation, after which we'll start building a house, with breaks and snacks as needed to tide us through to lunch. After lunch, we'll build more, always with breaks and snacks along the way. Later in the afternoon we'll return to the hotel for free time, dinner, and a team reflection.
Day 5
After breakfast at the hotel, we'll visit a community-based sustainable kitchen and take part in learning exchange activities. In the afternoon, we'll travel back to the hotel for free time, dinner, and a team reflection.
Day 6
Our final day of building! As usual, we'll have breakfast at the hotel, travel to the build site, and get to work. We'll have breaks for snacks and lunch, then in the afternoon put the finishing touches on our week's work. Afterwards, we'll return to the hotel for free time, dinner, and a team reflection.
Days 7-8
This is a time to celebrate with the community and fellow volunteers, have a farewell meal, and travel home (with some volunteers perhaps venturing to other destinations before home).

Please complete the form below and our Global Village trip leader, William, will reach out to you with next steps.
Complete the form as soon as possible as spots are limited and the fundraising deadline is approaching.
Costs:
Once approved, you can begin to fundraise to cover the cost of this trip: $2,450 for shared accommodations with an additional $202 should you prefer a private room. Fundraise:
Volunteers can fundraise some—or even all—of their costs. It is a great way to get your friends, family, and even your employers involved and make their own impact on building homes abroad.
Check with your employers to see if they provide matching gifts or even paid time off for volunteer service.
Habitat will provide you with a fundraising page that makes it easy to ask for support.
All fundraising and trip payments are due by November 15, 2026.

The program donation includes your expenses while in-country as well as a donation to Habitat for Humanity. (Airfare is not included.) $2,060- for single-occupancy accommodations. This includes food, accommodations, cultural activities, and a donation to Habitat to cover program costs.
We encourage volunteers to fundraise to cover this trip cost. Shortly after being approved for the trip, Habitat staff will contact you to help set up your fundraising page and offer additional support along the way!
Is it safe to volunteer in El Salvador?
Habitat has a long history of working in El Salvador, and volunteer health and safety is our top priority. Our sister affiliate in El Salvador know and live in the area and help ensure a safe and valuable experience for volunteers year after year. We also regularly follow international travel advisories closely. While we cannot guarantee personal safety, we do everything possible to keep volunteers out of harm’s way, both on and off the work site, and also include travel medical insurance in the trip cost. However, it is up to each individual to assess the trip details for their own comfort level.
What kind of work do volunteers do?
You won’t know what kind of work you will do until our first day at the construction site. Please be ready to do anything from digging foundations to whitewashing walls. Work may be physical, but we work as a team to make sure that people of all skill levels and abilities have a great experience. Everything becomes lighter when you work together!

Will we get to experience local historic sites or cultural experiences?
Yes! Part of serving abroad is understanding the historic and current events that local residents have experienced, as well as cultural landmarks and traditions, celebrated locally. Each trip includes at least one local cultural excursion.
Is there an age requirement?
All volunteers must be over the age of 16 and should be accompanied by a responsible adult.
“This was a life changing experience for me. You have showed me that volunteering is not just an occasional event. You’ve made me question who I interact with and why. What do I want to do with my time and who do I want to be surrounded by. Each and every one of you has left a little bit of chispa in my heart."
