Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley making finding affordable home repairs in Berkeley easy. 

Here are the 2 ways Berkeley homeowners can apply for home repairs:

  1. In partnership with the City of Berkeley, Habitat offers a limited number of repair grants. 
  2. For repairs between $15,000 - $200,000, Habitat for Humanity and Renew Alameda County (Renew AC) provide payment free 1% interest loans to qualified homeowners.

Current Program Availability & Timeline: Due to the high volume of applications we receive year‐round for the Berkeley grant program all homeowners interested in applying only to the grant program are currently being added to a waitlist. However, the Renew Alameda County loan program (for projects from $15,000 - $150,000) is open for enrollment.

Requirements

Once an applicant is approved, repair assessments are made to determine the scope of work and funding. There are 2 funding options for Berkeley homeowners:

  1. For many projects, grants are made to for qualifying repairs on single family homes, townhomes, condos, and multi-unit housing up to 4 units. 
  2. For projects from $15,000 - $150,000, Habitat for Humanity partners with Renew Alameda County (Renew AC) to provide affordable, low-interest deferred payment loans to qualified homeowners.

These loans are used for home improvement projects that help create a safe and comfortable home. The program is administered by Alameda County with funding provided by Alameda County taxpayers who approved the Measure A1 Housing Bond in November 2016. While the program is an Alameda County Housing & Community Development initiative, the program is operated by Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley. Required Documentation
  • Photo IDs and Proof of Legal Residency for all Applicants
  • Copy of Certificate of Title 
  • Proof of occupancy (including space lease agreement if in a mobile home)
  • Copy of Homeowner’s Insurance Policy
  • Income documentation for all household members 18 years of age and older  
Requirements

To qualify for the program you must:

  • Own your home. 
  • Live in your home. 
  • Earn no more than the maximum income for your household size, in chart below. Maximum Income depends on the number of people in your household not including full-time caregivers.

Submit a Request for Service form online or by mail below. This request is your opportunity to tell us about yourself and your home repair needs.

Habitat follow up

Once we receive your Request for Service, Habitat will review your submission and contact you with further questions or requests for more information and required documentation.

Inspection

After your request has been reviewed by Habitat, a professional contractor will visit your home to inspect requested repairs and create a plan to complete the repairs,
