Celebrating 40 Years in the Bay Area

This year, we celebrate 40 years of serving the East Bay and Silicon Valley. Four decades of constant work to build more and build better, through change and through challenge.

Everything we celebrate is the result of countless individuals who step up and lean in, even when the housing crisis is daunting. It's the volunteer who doesn't back down from a challenge. The donor who invests in a different vision for the future. The advocate holding our leaders to account. The parent charting a new trajectory for their family.

It's 40 years of facing challenge with audacity. Join us in building forward, boldly.

40 YEARS OF...

Habitat History

  • vintage Habitat Bay & Valley sign

    Bay & Valley Habitat

Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley was originally three separate affiliates, the oldest of which was founded as Bay & Valley Habitat in July 1986 to serve the southern region of our current service area. We joined forces to form Habitat East Bay/Silicon Valley in 2012.

    East Bay Habitat

Of our three original affiliates, the second was founded as East Bay Habitat for Humanity in April 1988, serving Alameda County and the western portion of Contra Costa County.
  • Mt Diablo Habitat worksite with signage on the fence

    Mt. Diablo Habitat

The third affiliate, Mount Diablo Habitat for Humanity, was founded in October 1990 to serve the eastern part of Contra Costa County. Mt. Diablo Habitat merged with East Bay Habitat in 2007 to build throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

    The Women's Crew

In 1995, a group of women at the Mt. Diablo affiliate decided to start volunteering and fundraising together as a group, forming the Women's Crew, which is still going strong today.

    AmeriCorps

If you're a volunteer, you've likely crossed paths with an AmeriCorps service member. AmeriCorps members began working with us in the mid-1990s, and we continue relying on their incredible service today.
  • a group of Global Village volunteers in El Salvador

    Global Village

In 2000, we began supplementing our active Global Investment program by organizing teams of Global Village volunteers, who raise funds and travel to build with a Habitat for Humanity effort abroad. In the years since, we have sent teams of volunteers to Central America, Asia, and Africa.
  • volunteers installing solar panels on a Habitat home

    Going Green

We starting "going green" long before it was common practice! As we began planning for the Fruitvale Avenue homes in Oakland in 2000, we launched a "Green Team" of staff and volunteers to explore how to build sustainably as well as affordably. Among many other new innovations, we installed our first solar panels on those homes in 2003.
  • The storefront of our first ReStore in Oakland

    ReStore

After starting as a housewares sidewalk sale outside our construction site, we opened our first ReStore location in Oakland in 2004. Since then, our donation-based retail operation has grown to three locations containing over 70,000 square feet of home goods whose proceeds benefit our mission.
  • Bob Frick on a bicycle

    Cycle of Hope

Longtime Habitat supporter Bob Frick spearheaded a series of cross-country bicycle rides to raise funds and awareness for our work, along with his wife, Barbara, and friend Len Holmes. He embarked on these rides beginning in 2008, galvanizing many others to join the movement.
  • Playhouses with children

    The Playhouse Program

In 2009, we launched the Playhouse Program as a way to engage corporate and community sponsors seeking a hands-on day of team building that gives back to the community. Starting with just a handful of playhouses, this program has become a sponsor favorite and donates hundreds of volunteer-crafted playhouses each year.
  • financial education workshop

    Housing & Financial Counseling

It began with a recognition that while homebuilding was a critical tool against the housing crisis, so many people required the financial foundation to be prepared for homeownership. Our Housing & Financial Counseling Program was launched in 2011 with just a few one-on-one counseling sessions. Today, this robust program serves over 1,000 people each year with individual counseling, financial education workshops, first-time homebuyer classes, and a financial education portal
  • volunteers repairing a home

    Home Preservation

In 2012, we launched our Home Preservation Program to address a serious need for repair services that would keep limited-income homeowners safe and comfortable in their homes. What started with just eight homeowners served in our first year is now a program that serves over 150 homeowners annually and also partners with other agencies to serve even more.
  • Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter volunteering in Oakland

The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project

President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter were well-known Habitat volunteers and ambassadors for forty years. In 2013, we had the honor of hosting them at worksites in Oakland and San Jose. His inspiration is still held close to our hearts.
  • Cycle of Hope riders pushing off the start line

Cycle of Hope: a mass movement

In 2018, we took the inspiration of the original Cycle of Hope rides—which launched 10 years prior—and turned it into a mass movement that welcomes hundreds of cyclists to ride and fundraise for Habitat each year.
  • A family of four smiles in front of their new home

    Building with Density

In Fremont, we built our first-ever condominium development, Central Commons. We celebrated the first homes' completion in 2019. Higher density building helps serve more people and families, while making the most of the land and resources available.

  • Habitat advocates on the steps of the CA state Capitol

    Advocacy

In 2022, we had a significant legislative victory in California. After years of unstable and insufficient funding through ballot initiatives, we were able to secure CalHome a place in the state budget for the first time. As the single state program that funds production of affordable ownership housing, this was no small feat! However, that funding is at risk. This is just one example of how important advocacy efforts are at the local, state, and federal level.

  • Completed homes at Esperanza Place in Walnut Creek

    Zero Net Energy

In 2024, we celebrated the completion of the first 23 homes at Esperanza Place in Walnut Creek. With this celebration, we not only marked the next chapter in these families' lives, but our first homes to meet Zero Net Energy standards—producing more energy than they consume. In addition to being built for density and transit access, Zero Net Energy represented a new milestone in our decades-long green building efforts.

  • Breaking ground on Sequoia Grove in Hayward

    Innovating for the future

This year, we'll complete construction on our "greenest" development yet, Sequoia Grove in Hayward. These ten homes are our first all-electric development in Alameda County, and this neighborhood incorporates never-before-used features like induction cooktops, solar battery backups, and EV readiness at every parking space.
